Students will have access to the PPT via our Google Classroom Portal and will use this PPT to view the pre-selected sources
On day three, students will go through the QFT inquiry development process to develop research question
After students have developed their compelling question, they will meet with their research team to further prioritize questions and identify their teams research questions.
Teams will be organized by what topic students choose to study. Teams will be limited to groups of five. If more than five students select a topic, two research teams will be made.
Students will submit their question to teacher for review and feedback.
Day 4: How to do research
Teacher will guide students through the process of conducting efficient research, focusing on evaluation of resources, keywords, delineating fact vs. opinion, and identifying bias in sources. Using the practice sheets below, students will fine-tune their research skills.
Students will be given pre-selected sources and asked to determine if the sources are reliable or unreliable. Students will need to pull on their knowledge of bias, fact vs. opinion, and source evaluation to determine the reliability of the source.
Day 5 - 7: Research in the computer lab
Students will spend three days collecting research about their topic using the internet.
Students will need to collect a minimum of five sources about their topic
As students collect their sources, they will complete a source analysis for each source they collect.
In the source analysis, students will be guided through the process of evaluating their source, identifying the important information in the source, and briefly summarizing the source.
**Scaffold option - students who do not finish will be given extra time during the school day to complete their research.
Due: By the end of day 7, students will submit the source analysis for teacher review.
Day 8/9 : Thesis statements, bibliography, in-text citations
Mini lesson (day 8) - review writing a thesis statement
Using the thesis statement presentation, the teacher will review the purpose of a thesis statement and how to write a thesis statement.
Bibliography
Using the bibliography presentation, students will be guided through the process of creating a bibliography
Distribute bibliography handout to students to use as a quick-reference when they create their own bibliographies.
Using their own sources, students will practice creating citations for thier sources and practice writing in-text citations.
Teacher will circulate providing feedback and guidance.
Students can use the citation handouts as reference.
Day 10-12: Pre-writing: Outline of research paper
Students will begin to analyze their resources and synthesise their research by first creating a detailed outline the follows the format of their research paper.
